World Above Welcomes Marina Carreira

marinaOn Wednesday, May 24th at 7pm the South Jersey Poets Collective welcomes Marina Carreira as the featured poet to World Above Free Poetry Night at Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage (2200 Fairmount Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401).

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, Marina Carreira will read.

Marina Carreira is a Luso-American writer from Newark, NJ. She holds a MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University and is curator of “Brick City Speaks,” a monthly reading series in Newark. She also works as a poet in the Geraldine R. Dodge “Visiting Poets in Schools” program. Marina’s chapbook I Sing to That Bird Knowing It Won’t Sing Back is forthcoming this summer from Finishing Line Press. Her work is featured in Paterson Literary Review, The Acentos Review, The Writing Disorder, Naugatuck River Review, Writers of the Portuguese Diaspora: An Anthology, Rock & Sling, Paper Nautilus, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, LUNA LUNA, The Harpoon Review, Hinchas de Poesia, among others. Cynthia Arrieu-King is an associate professor of creative writing at Stockton University and a former Kundiman Fellow. Her books include People are Tiny in Paintings of China (Octopus 2010), Manifest chosen by Harryette Mullen for the Gatewood Prize (Switchback 2013) and a collaborative book of poems written with the late Hillary Gravendyk, Unlikely Conditions (1913 Press 2016). She is the editor of the Asian-Anglophone edition of dusie and a contributor to Bitch Flicks.

The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, the members of Cool Women will read.

Known for their themed, improv-style poetry readings, Cool Women riff on each other’s poems like jazz musicians, providing an unpredictable and compelling performance. All nine members—Eloise Bruce, Juditha Dowd, Lois Marie Harrod, Betty Lies, Judy Michaels, Sharon Olson, Penelope Schott, Maxine Susman, and Gretna Wilkinson—have deep New Jersey roots. Since their debut in Princeton on Valentine’s Day, 2000, they have given dozens of readings in the tri-state area and as far away as Portland, Oregon.

Each of the Cool Women is widely published; collectively they have appeared in hundreds of literary journals, have won countless prizes, grants, fellowships, and awards, and have written dozens of books. They have taught and mentored all ages, from grade school through older adults. Together, Cool Women have produced six anthologies and two CDs of their work; their most recent book appeared in December 2016. This year they celebrate 21 years as a group and 17 years of performing together.

Cortney Lamar Charleston is the author of Telepathologies, selected by D.A. Powell for the 2016 Saturnalia Books Poetry Prize. A recipient of fellowships from Cave Canem and The Conversation Literary Festival, his poems have appeared, or are forthcoming, in Beloit Poetry Journal, Gulf Coast, The Iowa Review, The Journal, New England Review, POETRY, River Styx, TriQuarterly and elsewhere.

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, featured poet Lauren Yates will read.

Lauren Yates is a Pushcart-nominated poet and therapist-in-training who is originally from San Diego, California. She is currently a second-year Master’s student in Counseling Psychology at Temple University. After graduating, Lauren hopes to pursue a PhD in Counseling Psychology in order to develop a trauma-informed method of poetry therapy for the LGBTQ+ community. Lauren is currently a Poetry Editor for Kinfolks: A Journal for Black Expression and a member of The Mission Statement, whose goal is to create a safe space for Black writers in Philadelphia. In 2015, Lauren was a semifinalist at the National Poetry Slam as a member of The Fuze: Philadelphia Poetry Slam Team. Her work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in APIARY, Vinyl, Whiskey Island, and the Bettering American Poetry anthology. When she isn’t writing poems or processing feelings, Lauren spends her time perfecting her side-eye, mourning TV shows that were canceled too soon, and striving toward the perfect playlist.

On Wednesday, November 16th at 7pm the South Jersey Poets Collective welcomes Edwin Romond as featured reader to World Above Free Poetry Night at Stockton University’s Dante Hall Theater (14 N Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City, NJ 08401).

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, featured poet Edwin Romond will read.

Edwin Romond is the author of eight collections of poetry and has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and from both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania State Councils on the Arts. His work has twice been featured on NPR and he is the recipient of the 2013 New Jersey Poetry Prize for his poem “Champion.”  A native of Woodbridge, NJ, Romond now lives in Wind Gap, PA with his wife and son.

Sam Cha received his MFA from UMass-Boston, where he was the 2011 and 2012 recipient of the Academy of American Poets Prize. In 2016, Damfino Press released a five poem chapbook of his work, and his poems have appeared or are forthcoming in apt, Anderbo, decomP, DIAGRAM, Cleaver, Printer’s Devil Review, Rattle Poets Respond, Memorious, Missouri Review Poem of the Week, and RHINO. He lives, writes, edits, and teaches in Cambridge, MA.
