ly_dominguez_10252015-50On Wednesday, December 14th at 7pm the South Jersey Poets Collective welcomes Lauren Yates as featured reader to World Above Free Poetry Night at Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage (2200 Fairmount Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401).

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, featured poet Lauren Yates will read.

Lauren Yates is a Pushcart-nominated poet and therapist-in-training who is originally from San Diego, California. She is currently a second-year Master’s student in Counseling Psychology at Temple University. After graduating, Lauren hopes to pursue a PhD in Counseling Psychology in order to develop a trauma-informed method of poetry therapy for the LGBTQ+ community. Lauren is currently a Poetry Editor for Kinfolks: A Journal for Black Expression and a member of The Mission Statement, whose goal is to create a safe space for Black writers in Philadelphia. In 2015, Lauren was a semifinalist at the National Poetry Slam as a member of The Fuze: Philadelphia Poetry Slam Team. Her work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in APIARY, Vinyl, Whiskey Island, and the Bettering American Poetry anthology. When she isn’t writing poems or processing feelings, Lauren spends her time perfecting her side-eye, mourning TV shows that were canceled too soon, and striving toward the perfect playlist.
