This is a great month to set poetry goals for yourself. Many great poets that I have met have a few things in common: they dedicate a certain amount of time to writing on a regular basis, they read other poets’ poetry and they participate in listening to and sharing poetry with others. In the month of April, some poets dedicate time each day to write a poem, 30 in 30 or 30 poems in 30 days. It’s not too late to get started! As for reading, the Otto Bruyns Public Library has started a collection of local poets’ poetry books that is available to circulate. Make it a goal to read a new poet this month. As for the final component of fully engaging in National Poetry Month, I encourage all those who are able to attend one of the upcoming poetry events in the area.
